I don't get it...

I know that many of you bloggers have comment moderation enabled on your blogs - as do I. After you leave your comment you have to type in some funky letter combinations...which sometime mash together...which leads me to strain my eyes and try to decipher which letter the little geniuses hiding inside my computer want me to type. Now I turned this lovely letter feature on after I got a couple weird spammy comments from who knows where...and since then I haven't really gotten any more...so it must help? But my question for all...why does typing in these letters stop spam comments?? Are they just too lazy to decipher...or is there some interesting computer-y type answer that someone knows? Do tell...I am very curious! A little tidbit about me - I do a lot of thinking and ask A LOT of questions...and they are usually not very "deep" questions...so this may only be the beginning...

Here's something to share...
My sister-in-law, Erin (I have two sis-in-law Erin's) - this one lived by an IKEA in Arizona...
she gave me these cute shaped ice-cube trays...one stars and one hearts...
they have found a new purpose that Miss Allikaye loves (and so do I)...
The cheerios...and many times goldfish...fit right into each little shape, and are just small enough where Miss has to work a little to get them out! She has now started to bring me the trays to have me fill 'er up! Yay for Ikea...once again!

Have a wonderful weekend!!

as far as the letters go... i don't know; but about 50% of the time i get it wrong on my first attempt. what i don't understand is why they have to be illegible???
have a great saturday evening:D

No idea about the letters here! I never get it right the first try though and then the 2nd try they always seem to be bigger!
I love the snack tray! :)

I know, I know! Because most spammers use a type of program to send out spam messages and a program would not be able to decipher the letters. The spammer would have to actually, phisically type them in and that's what I know. Have a great day! Let's do your hair soon. I miss catch up time with you and Caleb is starting to forget his sign language you taught him. lol

I am in desperate need of new glasses, so I fail the lame letter test every time. Fun idea for the star ice trays. Lulu would just dump them. Your girl carries hers very neatly.

I think the spam comes from some sort of "auto-send" from a master computer that is out to destroy the world.
I like to read the little words and come up with a new word. One time I got to type EWOK, like Star Wars...that was fun :)

Okay...I'm sure this is more information than you really want....here goes: Those crazy letters are known as: Captchas (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart).

Captchas are those little tasks you have to solve in order to prove that you're human. Most of them display some distorted and noisy letters that you have to identify and reenter to pass. For now, these Captchas cannot be handled efficiently by computers; as such, the spreading of Spam is reduced drastically.

And that is why you have to type in those crazy little letters! :)
